How is FIZZiO Better than the Competition?
What is FIZZiO?
The FIZZiO Soda Fizzer system has three parts, shown in the photo below. These are the main three products that will be promoted in our upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
- On the left is the red and white FIZZiO Cap. In the image below, it is shown attached to several sizes of soda bottle. The cap screws onto any PET soda bottle, and has a patented, food-grade one-way valve in it. The valve lets CO2 into the bottle, but doesn't let CO2 out.
- In the middle is the FIZZiO Filler, which screws onto a large CO2 cartridge that can be purchased from us or from hundreds of other retailers, including Amazon.com. The Filler is used to inject pressurized CO2 into the headspace of the soda bottle, thus preserving the carbonation. The FIZZiO Filler will accept any CO2 cartridges with a 5/8" thread, from 25 grams to 75 grams. These larger sizes are more economical than the smaller cartridges commonly found in grocery stores.
- On the right is our FIZZiO SodaStream adaptor. The adaptor allows the FIZZiO Filler to use a SodaStream CO2 cartridge as the CO2 source. This is extremely handy and economical, as there are tens of thousands of retailers that carry SodaStream cartridges or their equivalent, and will exchange empty cartridges for full ones for around $16 per cartridge.

FIZZiO works with all existing supermarket brands in all sizes of bottles.
Other carbonators, like SodaStream, use proprietary bottles that must be purchased separately, and are limited to carbonating only plain water or flavored waters using their proprietary flavor packets. But FIZZiO works with all of your favorite soda brands. FIZZiO is the only product that works with all the original brands in their original bottles, from the smallest 7 ounce bottles to the largest two-liter bottles. FIZZiO fits every size and every brand.
FIZZiO lets you confidently purchase the largest bottles of your favorite soda.
Soda is cheapest per ounce in the largest bottles, but the bigger the bottle, the more likely it is to go flat before you finish it. And if you have to throw out half a bottle of flat soda, you've wiped out the savings from buying the bigger size. With FIZZiO, you can confidently buy the biggest two-liter bottles and be assured they will always be bubbly to the last drop.
FIZZiO uses larger, longer-lasting cartridges.
The FIZZiO Filler uses 75 gram cartridges, which last for many, many bottles of soda, and are very inexpensive per fill. In fact, FIZZiO can accept any cartridge with 5/8" threads, which is extremely common. Other products use the smaller, more expensive cartridges commonly found in grocery stores, which only last for one or two fills.
FIZZiO is compatible with SodaStream CO2 cylinders.
This is our most exciting innovation. The FIZZiO Filler can use your existing SodaStream CO2 cartridges, or any cartridge compatible with SodaStream! With over 10,000 retailers that sell and exchange SodaStream cartridges, you are likely not more than a few blocks from one. You can swap out an empty cartridge for a full one at most of these retailers, typically for around $16 per cartridge. SodaStream fillers last for hundreds of fills, bringing down the cost to just pennies per fill.
FIZZiO is a space saver.
All other home carbonators typically have a footprint comparable to a drip coffee maker. FIZZiO takes up zero space on your countertop, and can simply be tossed in a kitchen drawer when you are finished using it.
FIZZiO is portable.
FIZZiO is perfect for RVs, boats, and camping. It’s even small enough to throw in your backpack or pocket when you’re on the go.
FIZZiO bottles can be stored in the refrigerator on their sides.
Most soda drinkers find that their soda take up less space in the refrigerator if the bottles are laid on their sides, especially the larger bottles. You can do this with FIZZiO as well. Bottles pressurized with the FIZZiO cap can be stored on their sides without fear of leakage.
FIZZiO repressurizes the soda bottle with pure CO2, not air.
Some products on the market use an air pump to pressurize the bottle, like a pump for a bicycle tire. But physics tells us this cannot and does not work. Only CO2 can be used to keep CO2 in solution. At the risk of being a little nerdy, this principle is known as Dalton's Law of Partial Pressure. FIZZiO uses only pure, food-grade CO2 to keep the bubbles in, and this is the only method that works. It's science.
FIZZiO fill rate is fast.
The fill rate of the FIZZiO Filler is extremely high, pressurizing your bottle in seconds. The FIZZiO fill rate is over 30 liters per minute, so even a nearly empty two-liter bottle pressurizes in seconds.
FIZZiO carbonation level is adjustable.
You can achieve any carbonation level you want with FIZZiO. If you pressurize the bottle all the way until the CO2 stops flowing from the Filler's regulator, you'll get Champagne-like levels of carbonation. Want a lighter fizz? Just add less CO2.
FIZZiO is safe to use.
FIZZiO uses the original bottles that the soda came in, which are FDA-approved PET bottles, with no BPA or other harmful substances. Other products on the market use proprietary bottles which may not be regulated by the FDA. And the FIZZiO Filler is pressure regulated to a setting that is several multiples below the burst strength of a PET bottle, so it is virtually impossible to over-pressurize the bottle.

One FIZZiO user made a healthy homemade ginger ale using fresh grated ginger and honey, mixed them together in water and let it sit overnight, then fizzed it up with FIZZiO, and it was delicious!

The FIZZiO cap is designed so that the valve and red filling disk spin independently of the cap, so the valve stops spinning when it contacts the lip of the bottle during tightening. This means the valve isn't ground against the bottle lip as the cap is screwed on, eliminating wear and tear on the valve. We have had prototypes of the FIZZiO Cap in field testing for over 15 years now with zero failures. The new FIZZiO Filler is also extremely rugged, designed to withstand heavy use in busy bars and restaurants. FIZZiO is truly professional grade.

FIZZiO can be used for beer! Have your local pub fill your two-liter bottles with your favorite Belgian ale, and seal them up with FIZZiO caps. That way, your beer never goes flat, even if you don't finish it all in one sitting. How is FIZZiO Better Than the Competition?
FIZZiO doesn't have any direct competitors, as it is the first purpose-built soda keeper on the market. But FIZZiO is also a home carbonator. So we have to break down its competitive advantages into two categories, soda keepers and home carbonators.
- FIZZiO is the only product on the market that both preserves store-bought sodas in their original containers, AND can carbonate any beverage.
- Most home carbonators only allow you to carbonate water, or water mixed with the manufacturer's proprietary flavorings (like SodaStream). FIZZiO lets you carbonate anything.
- Some home carbonators allow you to carbonate other beverages besides water, but they cannot preserve store-bought sodas in their original containers. Only FIZZiO can do this.
Who is FIZZiO For?
The FIZZiO Soda Fizzer is first and foremost a soda preserver. So FIZZiO will appeal to anyone who loves bubbly soda, but hates flat soda and wasting money. So for anyone who has to manage a household budget, FIZZiO is for you. Moms with young kids, we're looking at you.
But the FIZZiO Soda Fizzer system is not just a soda keeper; it is also a home carbonator. So FIZZiO will also appeal to customers of SodaStream and other such home carbonation products, like Drinkmate, Ninja, Drinkpod, Mysoda, Philips, Aarke, and iSi. FIZZiO does things that these products can't do, such as preserving store-bought sodas in their original bottles.
Many of these SodaStream customers will see FIZZiO as a useful addition to their home carbonation efforts, especially since FIZZiO can use the same 60-liter CO2 cartridges that SodaStream and many others use. But we think that once these users try FIZZiO, they'll never go back to their ungainly countertop units. FIZZiO can do everything these products can do, but they can't do everything FIZZiO can do.

What Else Can FIZZiO Do?
This is huge: FIZZiO is interoperable with all of APPLIEDFIZZICS other products. Our FIZZiO Filler also works with the Perlage Champagne Preserver and the Perlini Cocktail Carbonator. Our FIZZiO Filler lets you preserve your Champagne, carbonate your cocktails, and keep your soda fresh! It's the Swiss Army Knife of carbonation--one tool works for everything! None of the other products on the market can do this.
Conversely, if you've already made an investment in one of our products, you likely already have our commercial or handheld CO2 filler. So all you have to do is add a few FIZZiO Caps, and now you can preserve your sodas too!
The long and short of it is this: If it involves bubbles, we've got you covered!
How Does FIZZiO Work?
When you open a bottle of soda, the "whoosh" you hear is escaping CO2, at a pressure typically around 25 PSI. FIZZiO works by restoring the headspace of the bottle to exactly the same conditions that existed before the cap was opened. FIZZiO puts pure, food-grade CO2 back into the bottle at the factory-original pressure of 25 PSI, exactly as existed before the cap was opened.
So, in a very real sense, with FIZZiO, the bottle never "knows" it's been opened! Whether the bottle is almost full or there's just a couple ounces left, whether the bottle has been opened for a minute or a month, the bubbles will be exactly the same as with a freshly opened bottle.
There are other products on the market that use other gases besides CO2. For example, one product we know of uses compressed air, from a pump-like apparatus built into the cap. Others use nitrogen or argon, or a mix. But these products do not work and, in fact, cannot work, according to the laws of physics.
At the risk of being a little nerdy, here's the reason. There is a principle in physics called Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures, which states that if there is a mix of pressurized gases in the headspace above a liquid in a closed vessel, each gas will come to equilibrium with the liquid independently of the other gases, and in proportion to the pressure of only that gas.
For example, if there is a mix of 20 PSI of gas A and 30 PSI of gas B in a bottle, for a total pressure of 50 PSI, gas A comes to equilibrium with the liquid just as if there were only 20 PSI of gas A and zero of gas B; and gas B comes to equilibrium just as if there were only 30 PSI of gas B and zero of gas A.
What this means is this: Only pressurized CO2 in the headspace of the bottle can keep CO2 in solution in the liquid. Pressurized nitrogen (say) in the headspace would do literally nothing to keep CO2 in solution. Even 1000 PSI of nitrogen would not make one little difference--CO2 would evolve out of solution just as fast as if the cap were left off the bottle. The only way to keep CO2 in solution (or put CO2 back in solution) is with pressurized CO2, and that's exactly what FIZZiO does. It's science!
